The First Year

I recently had a couple of friends begin to be interested in photography and have come to me with some questions. I am always glad to help and love answering questions/helping people learn (the teacher in me) but going through some of these questions made me stop and think about all of the things I have learned/accomplished in the relatively short time I have been a photographer who charges people money. 

There are so many facets of not only photography itself, but in the business side of photography as well. Not only do you have to learn how to use that "fancy" camera, but you have to learn how to run a business. Even though I feel like I was pretty well prepared when I started out, there have certainly been surprises, frustrations, tears and some sleepless nights along the way. 

When I know of someone starting out or just starting to dip their toes in the photography pool, I am so excited for them but also a little overwhelmed for them given the massive undertaking that is in front of them. I went through it and they are about to. I get it. 

Granted not everyone who is into photography has intentions of starting a business. Some people just love learning and want to improve. Some want to learn so they can teach. All of these aspirations are admirable and to me, there is nothing more satisfying than being able to do something you are passionate about and do it well, making money or not. 

So I wanted to create a series of posts that sort of document my first year and half (or so) of really taking this passion of mine seriously. I can look back someday and remember when I didn't know what focal length meant or how adjusting vibrance in post production would affect the overall look of my image. I can remember and reflect on how far I have come, how much work it takes and what is actually possible.

Hopefully someone else will also benefit from this undertaking. Maybe someone who is just beginning their photography journey or who is struggling during their first year might read this and be blessed, encouraged and inspired.

Ostrom Family // Large Family Photographer

When Jodi contacted me to see if I would be able to do a family session for FIFTEEN people, I was stoked! I've done a few different large family sessions before and even though they can be challenging (considering the number of people involved and getting everyone to look and have open eyes), I actually love them!! 

I love the challenge of positioning everyone and taking into consideration the families within the larger family as well as levels, colors and ages. I say the more the merrier! When Jodi told me they would like to do the photos on their property, I was even more excited! They have some fantastic areas right on their property for some great backgrounds and light. 

It was a pleasure capturing these moments for this large, friendly family who were all together again for a short time in May. Thank you for letting me share in your time!
